How to Clean a Tapestry

Tapestries are more fragile than rugs, so care should be taken when cleaning them.

While cleaning a carpet is something we can easily do, in the case of tapestries, we must say they are a bit more "delicate." So, when dealing with any stains or to remove dust, it's a good idea to follow this step-by-step guide, where we explain in an easy manner how to clean a tapestry.

Tapestries are fabrics with embroidered images made from materials such as wool or silk, and in most cases, they are handmade. This type of fabric is often hung on walls, so they tend to accumulate dust or get stained over time. Therefore, if you have one at home and want to clean it thoroughly, you should do the following.

Steps to clean a tapestry:

1. The first thing to do is to take down the tapestry and place it on a surface where it's easy for you to clean.

2. Grab the vacuum cleaner and attach the upholstery brush.

3. Vacuum the entire tapestry, both the front and the back. This will help remove all accumulated dust. It's a good practice to do this at least twice a year to keep your tapestry clean for longer.

4. If the tapestry has any stains, and if they are recent, you can apply a stain removal remedy by mixing 1/2 tablespoon of liquid dish detergent with 1 quart of water. Dip a cotton swab into the solution and test it on a corner of the tapestry to make sure it doesn't cause color loss. If it's safe, you can proceed to clean the stain completely by gently rubbing with a clean sponge, starting from the center and moving outward on both sides of the tapestry.

5. Additionally, most tapestries can be cleaned using carpet cleaners, so you can proceed with this type of product to hand wash your tapestry as long as you ensure it won't cause any damage.

6. Once you have cleaned the tapestry thoroughly, simply hang it up to air dry.
